Katy Perry Biography

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (born October 25, 1984), better known by her stage name Katy Perry, is an American singer-songwriter and musician. Perry rose to fame in 2007 with her internet hit "Ur So Gay", and in 2008 with her breakthrough single "I Kissed a Girl". Perry was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California by Christian pastor parents and grew up listening only to gospel music. After earning a GED during her freshman year of high school, she began to pursue a music career. As Katy Hudson, she released a self-titled gospel album in 2001. In 2004, she recorded an album with production team The Matrix, but it was never released. After signing on with Capitol Music Group in 2007, she adopted the stage name Katy Perry and released her first mainstream album, One of the Boys.

Katy Perry was born in Santa Barbara, California. The second child of two pastors, she has an older sister and younger brother. Her Evangelical mother, Mary Hudson (née Perry), grew up in Southern California and had "a tempestuous first marriage in Zimbabwe." Her father was a West Coast scenester in the 1960s. Perry's aunt and uncle were screenwriter Eleanor Perry and director Frank Perry, through whom she is also related to Charles M. Schwab. Perry is of Portuguese and German ancestry on her mother's side.
Perry was incorporated to her parents' ministry, and she started singing in their church from the age of nine; she continued singing in the church until she was 17. She grew up listening to gospel music and was not allowed to listen to what her mother called secular music. Perry attended Christian schools and camps. As a child, Perry learned how to dance in a recreation building in Santa Barbara. She was taught by seasoned dancers and began with swing, Lindy Hop, and jitterbug. She took her GED after her freshman year of high school and decided to leave school to pursue a career in music. Perry initially started singing "because I was at that point in my childhood where I was copycatting my sister and everything she did." Her sister practiced with cassette tapes, and Perry took the tapes herself when her sister was not around. She rehearsed the songs and performed it to her parents, who suggested she should take voice lessons. She grabbed the opportunity and began taking lessons at age nine to 16. She enrolled in at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, and studied Italian opera for a short time.

Perry dated Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy, whom she met in a recording studio in New York, on and off for several years. After more than a year of friendship and casual dating, they became serious with their relationship right before they embarked into the 2008 Warped Tour. Perry and McCoy broke up in December 2008.The two began dating again in early 2009 and broke up again a few months later. Perry is now engaged to British comedian Russell Brand after he proposed in December 2009.

As early as age 17, Perry began her collaboration with Glen Ballard, who was able to produce records and co-write songs for Alanis Morrisette's'95 Jagged Little Pill, which was indeed a chart-topper. After a few years, Perry worked with the Matrix, a team of producers/songwriters that had a Grammy nomination, and have worked in partnership with well-known artists like Shakira, Korn, and many others.

There was a time when the Matrix planned to have their own album with Perry being one of the singers. Those plans were eventually stopped, but prior to their shelving, Perry was featured in one of Blender Magazine's 2004 issues, wherein Perry was given the title of: "The Next Big Thing!"
In 2007, Perry decided to sign a contract with Columbia Records. "UR So Gay" was her debut single which caught the attention of a moderate number of people, specifically because of the unique music video and "happy-go-lucky" lyrical content. In 2008, what made a breakthrough for Perry in the industry was her single entitled: "I Kissed A Girl", which claimed the Number One spot in the music charts in around 20 countries, therefore pushing Perry's accompanying album called: "One of the Boys" into America's Top Ten.

Katy Perry also joined the so called "Warped Tour" in the summer of 2008, together with Travis McCoy of the group Gym Class Heroes, who has her boyfriend. Perry's "Hot N Cold" also became a number one hit. She also wrote three songs all by herself, one of which was "Thinking of You", which was included in the Top 40. Katy Perry is considered as a pop icon, both for her one-of-a-kind music and bizarre, but appealing sense of fashion.
